New Years Virtual 5k

New Years was the fourth and final opportunity to participate in Daily Vitamin F's virtual holiday races. I ran 7.5 miles with Nikki on New Years Eve and planned to count that as my race. But I realized that I didn't actually run a 5k for any of the three prior, and I wasn't hungover on January 1, 2012, for the first time in years. So, that day, when Josh and I threw around the idea of going for a walk and seeing the zoo lights, I mapped a route that was exactly 3.15 miles. It had us walk to Mount Pleasant through the park, and then home through the zoo.

The first part of the walk was in the rain but it was uncharacteristically warm here in DC so it felt nice. We brought an umbrella but used it only to cover our electronics as we took pictures. We walked uphill through the very crowded, very well-lit zoo, and I felt a little sad knowing it was probably the last festive thing we'd do this holiday season.

Obviously, this 5k was no race for me, but it was fun to cover the miles with Joshua. It was the only thing we left our home to do all day and, when it was over, we returned to finish January 1st off in my favorite way: with a big plate of nachos.

Happy New Year!

  1. Sometimes going for a walk (or run) in the rain is the best. Sounds like a nice way to cover 5k and the nachos look sooo good! :)
